Elon Musk Reveals Tesla Bot, A Humanoid Robot That Uses Vehicle AI, and It Will Be Released Next Year


During Tesla's AI Event, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Bot - a humanoid robot that uses much of the A.I. tech found in Tesla's autonomous vehicles to perform tasks such as getting groceries. Tesla didn't showcase a functioning version of the robot during the vent, but a performer dressed like a Tesla Bot appeared. Musk said that the prototype will be released next year.

The surprsing reveal came at the end of 90-minute Tesla's AI Day presentation, and Musk shared a few details about the humanoid robot The Tesla Bot is expected be 5'8" tall and weigh approximately 125 pounds, and he said that it will be built from "lightweight materials".

Musk revealed three slides that detail the robot's specifications. The Tesla Bot's head will have eight autopilot cameras by Tesla's vehicles to sense the environment and will feature a screen to dislay information. It will be operating via Tesla's Full Self-Driving computer.

According to the specs revealed, the Tesla Bot will have a top speed of 5 MPH, a Deadlift of 150 pounds., a Carry Capacity of 45, and an Arm Extend Lift of pounds.

The Tesla CEO explained that the Tesla Bot will be designed to perform "dangerous, repetitive, and boring" tasks such as fixing a car or picking up groceries.

Musk talked about he envisions the Tesla Bot changing the future of work. "This, I think, will be quite profound," Musk said. "Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice. If you want to do it, you can, but you won't need to do it."

In the past, Musk railed against the use of robots as weapons and warned of the risks they might pose.

"We should be worried about AI," Musk said during a question and answer session after the presentation. "What we're trying to do here at Tesla is make useful AI that people love and is ... unequivocally good."

Musk joked that the robot is inteded to be friendly and "navigate through a world built for humans." He also joked that you could both outrun the Tesla Bot and "overpower" it.

It will probably take a while before you can get your hands on a Tesla Bot, but Musk said that a prototype should be ready by next year.

Tesla is still developing the Tesla Bot - which is codenamed Optimus Prime - and the company has encouraged those who want to be a part of the future of AI and the development of Tesla Bot to join their team.
