What are the Fremen in the Dune Franchise?
Similar to the old classic franchises such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, the Dune franchise also involves a variety of factions to identify each character's race and background.
Aside from the Harkonnens, Atreides, and Bene-Fesserit Reverend Mothers, to mention a few, the story revolves around one of the main protagonists, Chani (played by Zendaya), who happens to be a Fremen.
The Fremen are a semi-human race who inhabited the planet Arrakis as their home.
They had always been oppressed by the wicked House Harkonnen who have long exploited Arrakis' most valuable natural resource: the Spice Melange.
However, this is not what the Fremen value most in their culture. What these people consider to be the most crucial thing in their history is conserving water. To them, water was life.
In relation to that, here's why the Fremen use nose plugs and intentionally choose to breathe through their mouths, instead.

What's Up with the Nose Plugs? Why Fremen Breathe Through the Mouth Explored
Considering that the majority of locations in the Dune franchise are surrounded by the desert, it's only natural for characters to preserve water or any other source and matter of liquid for hydration. In other words, a sense of frugality.
In this case, the face marks or nose plugs are used to capture the moisture that the users exhale out of their mouths. They call these devices "stillsuits", which could reclaim body moisture.
This includes moisture from the scalp using specialized headgear, and sweat coming from the forehead. With this device in function, the Fremen only lose a thimble of water per day.
When a Fremen dies in combat, instead of being buried, the water of the loser would be given to the victor of the battle to replenish their system through the "stillsuits."
Water also happens to be a huge part of the Fremen's religion. They are heavily superstitious, after all.
At one point, the Fremen used the Hymn to the Water, in which they called for the clouds to rain on their home planet which Arrakis had never seen.
Dune: Part Two will make its theatrical debut worldwide on March 1.
