The famous science fiction novel Dune by Frank Herbert has only been adapted onto the screen twice. The second one, as lucky as we are, happened in our generation.

Dune has had a successful running in the theaters despite having limited release due to the ongoing pandemic. Director Denis Villeneuve has been highly praised for his depiction of the alien civilization and the different worlds clashing.

Villeneuve has several reasons why he wants to direct a second Dune film. As a big fan of the novels himself, he reveals that Dune 2 is a necessity to cover the complexities of Herbert’s novel entirely, and fans agree.

So, why has the production of Dune 2 not been green-lit yet? Here’s the real reason why.

Why Is Dune 2 Not Green Lit For Production Yet?

Despite Dune having massive success upon its release, the limited theatrical reach has been hard on many production companies. A sequel would mean pumping up hundreds of millions of dollars into a single film. Warner Bros. is a large production company, and although it may seem like a small pocket change for these conglomerates, assurance that there will be a return on investment is still a high priority.

Dune’s budget was reported to be $165 million before marketing. With marketing, it can get very very expensive. As far as content, a second film would tackle so much more, a wider scope would be needed.

The production of Dune 2 would mean cashing out a lot of money. The scope of the upcoming installment would be wider than Dune and will be more extravagant. As most know, a second film always makes it or break it for most directors and adaptations.

Before Warners Bros. greenlights the production of Dune 2, they need a guarantee that people will watch it. As for Villeneuve's vision on Dune 2, he will have to hold onto it until Warner Bros. approves it.
