The Fate of Supergirl's Dog Krypto Explained

In Supergirl, the plot kicks into gear when the ruthless space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) hijacks the Maid of Might's ship and shoots Krypto with a poisonous dart. As the venom slowly starts to spread in Krypto, Kara is left with no other choice but to find a way to retrieve an antidote.

The problem? The only cure is in possession of the villain-in-chief, Krem, and Kara only has 72 hours to track him down, acquire it, and save Krypto before it's too late. This major deadline sends Kara and Ruthye on an action-packed trek across the galaxy.

Because of Krypto's state, Supergirl is forced to join Ruthye on her revenge mission. After enduring a brutal final battle on a planet with conflicting suns and outwitting Krem's Kryptonite defenses, Kara stops Ruthye from giving in to a cycle of bloodshed.

Kara defeats Krem by stabbing him in the neck with a sword, brutally dispatching him. By pulling the trigger herself, Kara protects the young girl's innocence. After defeating Krem, Kara retrieves the antidote from the villain and travels back to Holzherr, where she left her beloved companion, just in time to cure the mischievous pooch.

Krypto soon bounces back, and the movie ends with Kara and her healthy super-pup returning to Earth. In a lighthearted final sequence inside Clark Kent's Metropolis apartment, Kara surprises Superman by revealing she wants to stay on Earth for a long time.

Clark even tries to stop him from eating chocolate as Krypto flies in circles around the Man of Steel. As far as happy endings go, the DCU adaptation actually took a major departure from how Krem and Krypto's endings unfolded.

The choice to have Kara execute Krem marks a huge difference from the original source material, but likely left the audience with that cathartic blow.

In the 2021 graphic novel, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Krem actually lives, and Kara had him imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. This is because Kara only wanted to teach her young companion, Ruthye, that revenge is never the answer. Instead, the Maid of Might taught her that healing from your trauma starts with breaking the cycle of violence.

The adaptation followed the same rhythm from the graphic novel, up until Kara kills Krem.

Both film and graphic novel tricked Ruthye into thinking that Krypto had been in danger of dying, only for Kara to turn it into a lesson to teach Ruthye the true meaning of justice and the high cost of vengeance. Kara had merely orchestrated it to steer Ruthye away from the bloodthirsty revenge quest against Krem and to turn it into a rescue mission to change her mission and goal.
