While it's still early days for Tomo-chan Is a Girl! the show is already hailed for being a pure romance anime series at a time when many harem anime oversexualize their female characters. But do Tomo and Jun end up together in Tomo-chan Is a Girl? Here's what we know so far!

Spoiler Warning: There are manga spoilers below!

Tomo-chan Is a Girl's Premise and How It Questions Gender Norms

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! follows Tomo Aizawa, a high-school girl who catches feelings for her childhood friend, Jun Kubota, with whom she's recently been reunited.

Jun is oblivious to Tomo's advances and sees her as just "one of the guys," to the point that he actually thought Tomo was a boy when they were younger.

The anime, also known as Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! in Japanese, follows Tomo's comedic attempts to escape the friend zone and make Jun see her for who she is.

While this sounds like a very simple plot, this simplicity works really well, allowing the school romance anime to explore teen love in a cute way.

Moreover, in a medium that often resolves to essentialist gender stereotypes, this anime is considered a fresh and new romance.

It questions preconceptions about gender and explores how these can keep people from enjoying relationships to the fullest and being themselves.

It's hard to find an anime to replace last year's most iconic romance title, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, but for those looking for a sweet slow-burn love story, Tomo-chan might be a great anime to check out.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! is based on a four-panel manga that has concluded with eight volumes. In it, Tomo and Jun finally start dating.

As we established above, it takes more than a little while for Jun to understand and reciprocate Tomo's feelings.

Initially, Tomo's attempts to confess ended up in her being friend-zoned. This was particularly sad since Tomo and Jun's relationship was borderline romantic when they were younger.

For instance, Jun would wait outside of her house every day to walk to school together.

To add salt to the wound, it turns out that Jun does have feelings for Tomo, but he is not in tune with them because he's initially not open to the idea of dating a girl who is not stereotypically feminine.

Because of that, he misses out on starting a relationship with Tomo earlier on.

Over the course of the manga, Jun finally becomes more in tune with his feelings, realizing that he does love Tomo.

In one of the last scenes of the manga, Jun defeats Tomo's dad, Goro, in a martial arts fight.

After that, Tomo and Jun start dating, so we know that the anime adaptation is expected to have a happy ending!
