The deal between Marvel and Sony over Spider-Man has been a pretty confusing affair for a lot of people. Longtime followers of the character know that Spidey's official rights belong to Sony but a few years back, the studio agreed to work with Marvel to finally bring Peter Parker to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spidey's "homecoming" proved to be a good business venture for both studios but it's uncertain when their partnership will last.

Rumor has it that Spider-Man: No Way Home will mark the official end of the web-slinger's MCU exploits as he'll exclusively appear in Sony's own shared universe. But according to a new scoop from Giant Freakin' Robot, the House of Mouse is already exploring the possibilities of getting the full rights to the character.

According to the entertainment website's report, Disney is considering buying out the entirety of Sony just to get their hands on the exclusive rights to Spider-Man. As it stands, nothing has been confirmed yet but considering Disney has acquired the likes of Lucasfilm and Fox through the years, the idea of them adding Sony to that list seems probable when you think about it.

It would be nice for Marvel to finally get the rights to the Spider-Man franchise back but I honestly doubt Sony would be willing to let go of Spidey anytime soon, even for a hefty amount of cash. Spider-Man has proven to be a huge moneymaker for the studio over the years and in the long run, they'll definitely earn more by keeping him on board. But then again, anything can happen so never say never, I guess.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit cinemas in December 2021.
