According to Nancy's writing of The Perfect Stranger (which she based on Jonathan's photographs), Catherine and Jonathan have a highly sexualized romantic affair in Italy.

Catherine and Jonathan crossed paths in a resort hotel after Robert left the family vacation early due to work issues back in London.

After some intense romantic sparks between the two, they slept in Catherine's room where they had sex all night and Jonathan took sensualized photographs of Catherine. Nicholas was asleep while it was all happening.

The next day, after another round in the beach's dressing room, Catherine decided to cut ties with Jonathan and end their affair. Jonathan was devastated by her move.

Catherine napped on the beach while Nicholas was awake and playing around the sands. However, when she woke up, she found Nicholas in an inflatable dinghy in the water. She asked for help from the lifeguards.

Jonathan came to the rescue and tried to help Nicholas. While the kid was successfully saved, Jonathan drowned and was neglected by the people around including Catherine. He already perished when the lifeguards brought him back ashore.

Nancy believed that Catherine wanted Jonathan to drown and she was cold-hearted about his death as it would mean that their affair would not be exposed.

What Really Happened Between Catherine and Jonathan?

Episode 6 of Disclaimer starts to unravel the truth about Catherine and Jonathan's alleged affair in Italy and reveals that the version that Nancy wrote in the novel was not the reality that happened.

As it turns out, Jonathan's girlfriend Sasha left the trip after they fought. It's not because of the death of her aunt which is what Nancy depicted in the novel.

Catherine also recounted that Jonathan was watching her throughout the first day of her and Nicholas being alone on the vacation and did not engage with him at all.

It is a huge contrast to Nancy's novel which depicted them having intense sparks in their first meeting alone, which is an event that is too good for a romantic story.

The episode ended with Catherine breaking into Stephen's house and ready to reveal what actually happened in Italy.

Next week's finale will give us the entire truth of what happened between Catherine and Jonathan in Italy and how it is likely far from the version that Nancy wrote, which is more or less an exaggeration of the events.
