- Quick Answer: Yes, the film is shaping up to be a major box office flop, pulling in far below its $425 million break-even mark.
Masters of the Universe is now in its second week in theaters, but it looks like its collapse is continuing after a disappointing debut.
Despite being only the second live-action adaptation of the classic franchise, not to mention being led by an all-star cast that includes Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba, among others, the film has still failed to charm moviegoers. So, is Masters of the Universe officially a box office bomb?
Is Masters of the Universe a Flop?

With a budget of $170–$200 million, Masters of the Universe has to earn two and a half times its budget at the box office. However, the movie had earned only a quarter of that amount three days after its debut, making it a bad sign for its box office prospects.
In the US and Canada, it was projected to gross $30–$35 million from 3,677 theaters during its opening weekend, but it made only $11.7 million on its first day instead. This figure included the $4.4 million earned from Thursday night previews, putting it behind Scary Movie, which was already an ominous sign, considering it is an R-rated film, while Masters of the Universe is rated PG-13.
In its second week, the film grossed only $8.6 million, showing a huge 70% drop and putting it behind newly released movies such as Disclosure Day, Obsession, Scary Movie, and Backrooms.
According to The Wrap, the sharp decline might be due to its failure to appeal to audiences beyond “Gen X male moviegoers nostalgic for the '80s fantasy franchise.”
Variety, meanwhile, claimed that Masters of the Universe is shaping up to be one of the biggest box office flops of the year, giving the film “a harder time justifying its mega price tag.”
With its whopping budget, the remake needs to earn around $425 million just to break even.
However, as of June 14, Masters of the Universe has grossed only $46.7 million in the US and Canada and $39.4 million in international markets, for a worldwide total of just $86.1 million.
Will there be Masters of the Universe 2?

The Masters of the Universe reboot ended by setting up a potential sequel through its post-credits scenes.
Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) is seen recovering Skeletor’s skull, hinting at his return in a possible next installment.
It also teases the arrival of Stratos, as a distress call from the bird-people of Avion hints at the debut of the iconic flying hero.
Meanwhile, the heroes themselves go on a journey to fully step into their roles as the guardians of Eternia, a storyline that was expanded upon in spinoff comic materials such as the Legends of Eternia manga.
However, despite these teases, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures have yet to officially announce Masters of the Universe 2.
Ultimately, the studio will make its decision based on the film’s final theatrical performance and reviews. With mixed critical reception and poor box office performance, however, it remains to be seen whether He-Man’s journey will continue.
