Director Hints The Conjuring 4 Could Be the Final Film of the Franchise

A true horror fan will be familiar with The Conjuring universe and may have been moved by the love and ghost story of married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren at least once. Fans have been delighting over the onscreen portrayals of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson for years, but as one would say, all things must come to an end. Director James Wan hinted that the final installment of the franchise is nearing completion.

In an interview with Collider, Wan suggested that Conjuring 4 might be the final stretch of the film series. “With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them],” Wan said. “And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it's the right thing, the right story that we're telling.”

The Warrens' psychological activities lasted for many years, and the movies have a selection of narratives that they can show on screen. However, with the possibility of the story concluding as Wan stated, the interviewer inquired if the fourth installment was the final one. “We never know. You never know. We'll see.” he subtly responded.

In 2021, the third Conjuring movie, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, grossed over $2 billion at the global box office, making it the most successful horror franchise in history. Despite this achievement, Warren’s most famous case file, the Amityville Horror mystery, is yet to be depicted on screen, and some sources say that it’s the possible plot for The Conjuring 4.

More details about the fourth installment are still being kept under wraps, but the director of the third movie, Michael Chaves, is reportedly also going to helm Conjuring 4. He's also working on The Nun 2. Vera’s real-life sister, Taissa Farmiga, will reprise her role as Sister Irene in the sequel to The Nun, and filmmaker Wan has hinted that both Farmiga sisters may cross paths in the story.

The Nun 2 arrives in theaters on September 8, 2023.
