Did The Suicide Squad Help James Gunn Get Rehired by Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

There is little doubt that James Gunn's firing and eventual reinstatement as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was some sort of Disney miracle. However, most fans view it as a classic case of "not knowing what you got till it's gone" especially because Gunn was almost immediately hired by Warner Bros. to helm The Suicide Squad. But did Marvel Studios really choose to bring the filmmaker back because of his involvement in the DC Extended Universe flick?

Gunn has finally shed some light on the subject. A fan recently commented on the director's post on Instagram, asking whether Gunn believed that Disney would consider bringing him back to direct the third Guardians film if DC had not given him the opportunity to work on The Suicide Squad. The filmmaker's response is short and straight to the point.

"I know for a fact they would have as they didn't know about Squad when they first talked to me," Gunn wrote.

Oops. Looks like we had that whole thing wrong all this time. As it turns out, Disney may have already reconsidered firing Gunn long before he was tapped to helm The Suicide Squad. Luckily, we finally know the truth about the situation.

Gunn has just wrapped production on The Suicide Squad, which is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021. He is then expected to begin working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which has not yet been given an official release date.
