The following contains major spoilers about the Dexter: New Blood finale.

The final episode, appropriately titled Sins of the Father, resolved the fate of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), who, after cheating death several times previously, ultimately accepted it.

The fact that the death occurred at the hands of his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), not only sent the serial killer to his seemingly inevitable end, but also saved the youngster from succumbing to his own Dark Passenger.

Showrunner Confirms Dexter’s Death in New Blood Season Finale

Dexter was arrested for the murder of Matt in the finale, a circumstance he had successfully avoided several times in the original series. Dexter kills Sergeant Logan in his escape plan before fleeing to Harrison and wanting to leave town on the run.

When Harrison discovers what Dexter has done, he turns against him and prepares to shoot him with the firearm that Dexter gave him in the previous episode. Harrison awakens Dexter to what he has become, and Dexter orders his son to kill him.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips has since confirmed to Deadline that Dexter Morgan is officially dead after being shot willingly by Harrison.

"I have three words for you: Dexter is dead...Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead."

Dexter finally accepts what he has done and the numerous innocent individuals who have perished as a result of his actions before being shot. He also expresses a genuine affection for his son that he has never experienced before.

Dexter's Demise Was Necessary

The writers and Hall had planned to kill off the character early on.

"It was determined that Dexter must die," Phillips said. "We can't turn Dexter into a superhero getting out of impossible jams every season. It has to end, viscerally and inevitably."

The psychopath's death is the first time he is "feeling love, and it's for his son, and that's as human as he's ever been."

Will There be a New Dexter?

Gary Levine, Showtime's President of Entertainment, refused to comment on the franchise's future or any new franchise with Harrison.

Dexter: New Blood is a limited series and any further discussions of Dexter will have to wait until we finish airing the limited series and see where we are with our stories and our characters,” Levine said in a statement last week.

While Dexter Morgan is officially dead, he might always return as Harrison's subconscious. Time will tell if there will be another continuation of the Dexter franchise.
