It has been a long wait for the North American premiere of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train. However, its US theatrical release isn't without any competition. The anime film is currently battling it out with Mortal Kombat for the top spot in the weekend box office.
There is little doubt that anime fans have been waiting for Mugen Train to be released in the US. After all, the movie actually premiered in Japan back in October 2020. Nevertheless, it finally got its North American theatrical release on Friday, April 23, 2021.
Interestingly, the Demon Slayer movie isn't the only highly anticipated release on Friday. The Mortal Kombat reboot also premiered on the same day after yet another delay. Although the film was set for release on April 16, it had been pushed back by a week.
But which movie will win in the battle for the top film at the domestic weekend box office? Mugen Train has already proven that it has what it takes to dominate, having grossed over US$444 million worldwide. It is currently the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan as well as the highest-grossing anime film, defeating Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.
It's a tough competition but Mortal Kombat also has an edge. After all, there are millions of gamers who have been loyal to the video game franchise who have been waiting for the reboot. Needless to say, we can't wait to find out who emerges with a flawless victory this weekend.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train is now screening in the US. Mortal Kombat is also being shown in theaters worldwide and on HBO Max.
