Demon Slayer Movie Mugen Train Overtakes Mortal Kombat in 2nd Week of Box Office Battle

The box office battle between the Demon Slayer movie and Mortal Kombat is getting more heated every week. Mugen Train has just overtaken the video game adaptation and it has no plans of slowing down.

Last week, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train and Mortal Kombat premiered in the US on the same day. This launched an epic battle between the two films at the domestic box office. Although Mugen Train had an edge for not being launched with a digital release, Mortal Kombat emerged as the top-grossing movie on both films' opening weekend.

Amazingly, the Demon Slayer movie is back with a vengeance. Variety reports that Mugen Train brought in an awesome $6.4 million in domestic ticket sales. It's just a little over Mortal Kombat's earnings which totals $6.2 million on its second week.

Although Mugen Train narrowly defeats Mortal Kombat in the second round, the reboot still won in total. Mortal Kombat now boasts $28.2 million domestically. Nevertheless, the Demon Slayer film is catching up with 25.4 million so we'll have to wait and see what happens in the third week.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train continues to win big globally. It was recently announced as the top-grossing anime film of all time, defeating Studio Ghibli's longtime champion Spirited Away. Needless to say, we're expecting Mugen Train to continue smashing records once it is released digitally in June.

Both Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train and Mortal Kombat are still screening in theaters in the US.
