Rob Liefeld addresses the possibility of Josh Brolin returning to reprise his role as Cable in the rumored Deadpool 4, which would be part of the MCU.

There have been rumors that Ryan Reynolds is interested in featuring Cable, Wolverine, and Storm in the next Deadpool movie, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool

Josh Brolin first played Cable in the 2018 movie Deadpool 2, traveling back in time to kill young mutant Russell Collins, aka Firefist (Sala Baker), before he could kill Cable’s future wife and daughter.

Cable eventually teamed up with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and the X-Force to fight Juggernaut. He then used the last charge of his time-travel device to save Deadpool’s life instead of returning to his own timeline, leaving him stranded in the present.

But despite the major role he played in the sequel, Cable didn’t return in the third film, Deadpool & Wolverine, which marked the Merc with a Mouth’s introduction to the MCU alongside James Howlett, aka Logan. So, will he finally be part of the potential Deadpool 4?

“I'm not sure. Maybe Cable is not something he's interested in anymore, but I would hope, given the opportunity, he would return,” Rob Liefeld told The Direct.

The Deadpool co-creator himself admitted that he loved Brolin’s portrayal of the time-traveling mutant, adding that there was “so much more meat on those bones.”

However, as one of the most sought-after actors today, with roles in movies like Dune and Weapons, Liefeld acknowledges Brolin doesn’t need comic book movies to sustain his career.

As for Reynolds, Deadpool has become his signature role, synonymous with his name, so he assures fans that more movies featuring the character are on the way.

“Obviously, there's going to be more Deadpool... For Ryan [Reynolds], that's his Karate Kid. Ralph Macchio had Daniel-san, and Ryan has Deadpool,” he continued. “I think the joke about Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine 'til he's 90 is also Ryan. So, that's my opinion on that.”

While Brolin’s return as Cable remains unconfirmed, the character’s unfinished story leaves room for a potential comeback in Deadpool 4.

Ryan Reynolds confirmed there would “eventually” be a fourth Deadpool movie during his appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York City in July.

“There’s a few really deep cuts that are missing from the movies; I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics,” he said. “There’s certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan is a friend and an incredible comic book writer.”

He added that there would be “stuff upcoming” and promised things were “going to be great” for “another Deadpool film.”

Since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, Wade Wilson’s MCU fate has been less certain. While there are rumors that he may appear in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars alongside Wolverine, nothing has been confirmed yet.

But what is certain is that Reynolds wants the X-Men to team up with his antihero in his next Marvel movie.

“His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

With a fourth Deadpool movie on the horizon, fans will have to wait and see whether Wade finally gets the chance to join the X-Men or the Avengers.
