One of the many DCEU films that are currently in the works is Blue Beetle, which will focus on the Jaime Reyes iteration of the titular hero. The film was originally going to be an HBO Max release before they moved it to the theatrical slate. For the past few months, we've been hearing some updates regarding the project including the casting of Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero. Now, another actor is set to join the cast.
Deadline has reported that What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén is in talks to join the cast of Blue Beetle. The details regarding his role are still under wraps at the moment. Angel Manuel Soto is set to direct the film from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s screenplay. John Rickard serves as the producer. Production will reportedly begin this year.
Guillén's casting comes after his breakout role in the current FX comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, where he plays vampire familiar Guillermo de la Cruz. He recently had a recurring role in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and Reacher. He will also be the second confirmed cast member of the film following Maridueña, who was cast last year.
It is hard to speculate right now about which role might Guillén be playing in the film and whether he will be playing an ally or the antagonist since there are a lot of characters in the comics that they can base on. However, it is exciting to hear that he will be joining the cast as he has proved in What We Do in the Shadows that he is talented and has great comedic timing. We can safely assume that perhaps he will also have a comedic role in the film.
With this news, it is a sign that production might begin soon since they are starting to recruit the supporting cast members that will be joining the film and we should be hearing more casting news regarding the project as they are getting closer to filming.
