DCEU To Reportedly Be Separated Into Two Universes

The underwhelming box office and critical performance of Batman v.Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League has thrown a monkey wrench into the plans that Warner Bros. for the DC Extended Universe. Now, the studio is reportedly rebooting everything to have two separate continuities.

According to We Got This Covered, a new universe will be established starting with The Batman. Robert Pattinson will make his debut as the new Caped Crusader and will exist in a separate universe.

Previous reports suggested that it will be a standalone film, but new rumors are suggesting it will be a trilogy. Now, it looks like it will be the foundation of a new universe after all.

The Supergirl film will reportedly be set in this new universe as well and that it will be used to introduce a new Superman. It hasn't been confirmed whether or not Henry Cavill is exiting the role though. The last update was that Warner Bros. has no plans for a Man of Steel sequel.

Wonder Woman and Aquaman will continue to be played by Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa in the original universe. The likes of Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey will still be set in this continuity as well since they are creations for the original canon.

It is unclear where Shazam! stands though. The film featured a version of Superman that looked very much like Cavill's version in terms of the costume. However, his face wasn't shown, which can give Warner Bros. some leeway to bring it over to the new continuity since the film has been quite a success. Meanwhile, the Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix is not connected to either of these universes.

The studio is not ruling out the idea of merging these two universes together at some point, but this isn't exactly a concrete plan yet. According to the above-mentioned publication, Warner. Bros. is focused on shaking off the bad press attached to the early years of the DCEU at the moment.
