DC Boss James Gunn Reacts to Being Compared With Kevin Feige of Marvel

DC and Marvel are undeniably two of the most popular franchises in the world. Given how successful they are, fans always pit them against each other.

James Gunn used to work for Marvel as a director; now he is delighting in a new role at DC as the co-CEO. He intends to revamp the DCU with Peter Safran.

As Gunn enjoys his upgraded job, some fans can’t help but compare his new post with Marvel’s president, Kevin Feige, who has been with Marvel since 2007.

Gunn and his brother Sean Gunn sat down with WIRED's Autocomplete Interview YouTube show, where they responded to Google’s most searched question about them.

One of the revealed questions is, “Is James Gunn the Kevin Feige of DC?” Sean said, “There's a Venn diagram where what they do is similar, and there's part of it where what they do is different, right?” before James replied to the inquiry.

“It's actually a little different. I mean, number one, DC Studios is a studio, so it's a little bit different. Peter Safran does a lot of what Kevin Feige does. A lot of what I do is I just work on the creative side of things.” J. Gunn reasoned.

He continued, “So mapping out the stories and the creative side of the universe is my job much more so than some of the more administrative, executive-type stuff. And Kevin has to do both.”

The DC boss also said that during his stint at Marvel, he was consulted for several MCU projects, for which he gladly sent out his input.

“I was consulting on all the Marvel movies. Kevin would send me the script for Spider-Man and I'd give my notes. He'd send me the script for Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel, and I'd give notes on all of those scripts. It was really as a friend and as somebody who was a part of the team and a team player.” said J. Gunn.

One of the most anticipated projects of the new DCU is Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, for which he will direct and serve as writer. His Superman film is set to premiere on July 11, 2025.
