Dave Bautista: James Gunn had an Idea for a Drax/Mantis Movie

James Gunn is set to cap off a trilogy with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but as it turns out, he actually had an idea for some spinoffs, particularly one with Dave Bautista's Drax.

Talking to Collider Video, Bautista himself confirms, "James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax/Mantis movie, and that's what I would be up for because there's too much fun there." Bautista goes on to say that the idea never really got picked up since Marvel's slate was already so full, but he would definitely be up for a film if that was the case.

If anything, I don't think a Drax/Mantis movie would sell well as a movie. With Disney+ giving the spotlight over to side characters like Falcon, Bucky, Wanda Maximoff, and Loki, I can definitely imagine this Drax/Mantis spinoff as a Disney miniseries.

I don't really know where Gunn could take the story, but Mantis has somewhat become a new ‘daughter' for Drax. Honestly, if a movie was based on the two characters, I could just imagine it as a comedy. I don't think there's too much meat there for an entire film, but I'm not James Gunn, so what do I know.

We don't know when cameras start rolling for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Gunn is said to start working on the film the moment he finishes work on The Suicide Squad. Let's hope he manages to end his trilogy properly, seeing that a lot of people had tried very hard to get him back on the helm after Disney had him fired for a couple of months.

No release date has been set for GOTG Vol. 3, but you can catch Gunn's The Suicide Squad in theaters Aug. 6, 2021.
