  • Quick Answer: Damon Lindelof confirmed he was fired from his Rey-centered Star Wars movie due to incredibly slow writing and a script concept that failed to work.

Damon Lindelof's heavily rumored Star Wars departure is a secret no longer. The Lost and Watchmen mastermind has officially confirmed he was fired from his planned Rey-centric sequel film, revealing that his high-concept pitch, which he describes as a literal "Protestant Reformation" inside the galaxy far, far away, buckled under its own weight.

In an interview with The Ringer-Verse, Lindelof reflected on his time in Star Wars, particularly his scrapped movie pitch that would have been akin to "the Protestant Reformation inside Star Wars."

Lindelof decided to address the "Bantha in the room", confirming that he was fired off of a Star Wars movie: "They asked me, 'What do you think a Star Wars movie should be?' And I said, 'Here's what it should be.' And they said, 'Great, you're hired.' And then two years later, I was fired. And so I was wrong. At least through that prism."

He went on to explain what he and his partners, Justin Britt-Gibson and Rayna McClendon wanted to bring to life in the franchise: "There is a Force of nostalgia, and there is a Force of revision, and they are at odds with one another. And let's do the Protestant Reformation inside Star Wars. And it didn't work."

Lindelof recalled that while Lucasfilm "seemed to like the premise", the "writing was really hard" and "slow."

"The tone, getting it right, where it was inside of the canon, what its relationship was to Episode 9. Is it starting a new trilogy? All of those things, they're so massive. They're so big," Lindelof said, seemingly confirming they were initially considering shifting the spotlight to Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron.

Lindelof's Question for Star Wars: Are Mando and Grogu the New Center of Star Wars?

The emotional core of the modern era remains highly debated. Lindelof pointed out that when The Force Awakens launched in 2015, the narrative became crystal clear: the spotlight was shifting to Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. No sooner had he realized that the "new trilogy was over" than he noticed a major change in how Disney identifies its core heroes. With the sequel trilogy characters put on ice, the focus has completely pivoted to the small screen.

In this sense, Lindelof mused, "The new question is, are Mando and Grogu the center of Star Wars now?"

The question is more relevant than ever. Since Kathleen Kennedy stepped down and Dave Filoni took over creative leadership at Lucasfilm, fans are eager to see what a unified vision for the franchise looks like. However, theatrical development has been notoriously slow. Apart from next summer's Star Wars: Starfighter and Ahsoka season 2 being pushed to a 2027 premiere, the release calendar has been largely blank.

Lindelof's firing served the biggest challenge facing the franchise today: balancing the immense weight of legacy nostalgia against the desperate need for reinvention. As Lucasfilm continues to search for its true theatrical center, the pressure shifts to Disney's favorite streaming duo to prove they can carry a blockbuster film on their shoulders.

The Mandalorian and Grogu film premieres in cinemas tomorrow, May 22, 2026. Stay tuned!
