Dakota Johnson Seemingly Confirms Madame Web Casting

A few days ago, we learned that Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson has been cast to play Madame Web in Sony's Madame Web movie as part of their Spider-Man Universe franchise. The news surprised a lot of fans, especially with the nature of the character who has been traditionally presented as an elderly woman and it hints that the film will have a very different take on the character.

Recently, Johnson seemingly confirmed her casting as Madame Web she posted on her Instagram story a single spider-web emoji. Given the timing of the post, it has been presumed by many that the actress is referring to the recent news regarding her casting on the role and the post could be the official confirmation from her that she is indeed going to join the Sony franchise. While you can argue that the spider-web emoji on her story might mean something else, we can pretty much say at this point that it is about her Madame Web casting since it was posted days after the news broke. Neither Sony nor Johnson's representative has made an official statement about her joining the Spider-Man Universe franchise, but this is the first time that we've heard from any of them addressing the casting news.

A lot of fans are still confused about Johnson's casting as Madame Web given that the character is usually presented as an elderly woman and is also not the type of character who you would think can carry an entire film since she doesn't do a lot of fighting due to her condition. Now that we know that the Suspiria star is going to play the role, it is an indication that Sony will be doing a very different take on the character from the comics.

Nevertheless, it is exciting that Johnson is going to join the franchise as she has proven in some of the films that she starred in the past few years that she is one of the best young actresses working today whether it's in a horror role like in Suspiria or a dramatic role like in The Lost Daughter. It is also curious to see how Sony will handle the character in her own solo films since we know now that it will be a brand new take.
