Rather than rewriting the emotional ending of the original, Ackles' pitch essentially hinges on one dramatic catalyst that would immediately set a new storyline in motion without it feeling forced to bring them back.
"I would have liked to have Jack come through the front door and just walk up to Sam and Dean and just be like, 'I need to send you guys back'..." Ackles said. "Which just opens the door to something in the future."
Instead of a full, multi-year TV order, Ackles's suggestion of a limited revival would provide an immediate sense of urgency, allowing the characters to reunite for at least one episode or two, while honoring the emotional weight of where their original journey left them off.
This Is Not the First Time the Studios Tried Reviving Supernatural
Bringing the Winchester universe back is anything but a new impulse for Warner Bros. and The CW. Over the course of the main show's 15-year run, network executives repeatedly tried to launch official spin-offs to expand the franchise.
For example, Bloodlines (season 9) was designed as a back-door pilot set in Chicago, so they could explore five mafia-like monster families secretly ruling the city's underworld. Unfortunately, the CW ended up passing on picking up the series.
In Wayward Sisters (season 13), Sheriff Jody Mills took center stage with a group of trained young women hunting monsters. While this fan-favorite spin-off concept still generated massive online support, the network opted not to order it, either.
This is because both seasons had to rely on an ensemble cast rather than the iconic brotherhood at the heart of the main franchise.
Lastly, The Winchesters (2022), which was executive produced by Ackles and his wife, Danneel. The prequel series would focus on a young John and Mary Winchester.
While it successfully aired for one season on The CW, network shifts led to its cancellation in 2023. Plus, hardcore fans found it difficult to get invested in John and Mary's early hunting days as it clashed with the formerly established backstory.
