Comic Creators Respond to J. J. Abrams’ Son Writing for Spider-Man

When Marvel released a webbed up 4, fans were hoping for a comic book adaptation of Sam Raimi's unreleased Spider-Man 4. However, people got their hopes up too high since it ended up being a countdown for a big Spider-Man event. That ended up being a new comic coming out in September called...Spider-Man, and it's written by J. J. Abrams and his son Henry Abrams.

Oh wait, Henry is the lead writer and J. J. is only helping out. Yikes.

This has, unsurprisingly, resulted in a lot of backlash from comic book creators since it's clear that Marvel just wanted people to pay attention to this series since a celebrity is involved. John Layman, who has written a number of acclaimed comics like Chew, had this to say:

Oof.

However, veteran Spider-Man writer Gerry Conway was much harsher. He criticized how some articles made it seem like J. J. would be writing the series, clarifying that it would be Henry writing the series.

More writers have also expressed their displeasure with this publicity stunt and it's easy to see why. While celebrities are cool and all, these hard-working comic book writers are readily available to write stories for Marvel, whether it be for a minor or major character. This is why so many creators have turned to creator-owned comic books.

At least Sara Pichelli will be drawing it. If there's one thing great about this comic, it'll be the art. Pichelli has drawn a lot of Miles Morales' adventures so if fans are planning to pick this up, do it for Pichelli.

Spider-Man #1 (of 5) will be coming out this September.
