CLAMP's xxxHolic Manga Get Live-Action Film - Release Date, Synopsis, and More

CLAMP’s popular manga series xxxHolic will have its own live-action film. This was announced by Shochiku and ASMIK. Production for the movie is now in the works.

The film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on April 29, 2022. There is no announcement yet for international screening as of this time. Mika Ninagawa will be directing the film, while the script will be written by Erika Yoshida. Ninagawa has directed the live-action Sakuran and Helter Skelter movies.

The main protagonists Watanuki Kimihiro and Yuuko Ichihara, will be played by Ryunosuke Kamiki and Kou Shibasaki, respectively.

xxxHolic is a manga series created by CLAMP and was released in the Weekly Young Magazine and Bessatsu Shonen magazine from 2003 to 2011. Its sequel, xxxHolic: Rei was released in 2013. The popularity of the manga has paved the way for two anime series, an anime film, and original anime video projects. The characters of the series were also featured in other CLAMP-related works, such as CLAMP in Wonderland and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.

Before the announcement of this live-action adaptation, a stage play adaptation ran in Tokyo from September 17 to 26, then in Kyoto on October 1 to 3.

xxxHolic follows the witch Yuuko Ichihara who has the ability to grant people’s wishes with a price of giving their most precious possessions. Watanuki Kimihiro was no ordinary boy as he had the ability to see visions and under supernatural things around him. He stumbles upon Yuuko’s shop and Yuuko promises him that she will remove all the spirits that haunt him. In return, Watanuki has to work for Yuuko by helping out in the shop and helping grant other people’s wishes.

The series was notable for its uniqueness and also its art. So far, no trailer has been released yet for the film, but many fans are looking forward to this adaptation.
