The Marvel Cinematic Universe's fourth phase saw the long-overdue ascension of Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson from Falcon to the new Captain America and the future sure looks bright for the potential new leader of the Avengers. However, it looks like Marvel Studios is planning to shake things up a bit and if the latest rumors are to be believed, Steve Rogers will make a surprising return to the franchise.

The said rumor began circulating in early 2021, two years after Evans "retired" the Captain America mantle in Avengers: Endgame. The 41-year-old actor has previously discussed the idea and revealed his hesitance in potentially coming back. Now, the actor is once again chiming in on speculation surrounding his MCU future.

After The Hollywood Reporter took to Twitter to report about Julius Onah's directorial role in the fourth film, the outlet pondered Sam's future as the Star-Spangled Avenger and if there's a possibility that Evans would return as the original Captain America.

The Lightyear actor would respond with a tweet of his own, pretty much shooting down all speculation surrounding his potential return as Cap, saying: "Sam Wilson is Captain America". Check it out below:

While it would be tempting on Marvel Studios' part to do a "Captain America vs Captain America" between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, I think the spotlight should solely be on Sam, at least for the time being. As for Evans' potential involvement in the sequel, he can always play a mentor role to Anthony Mackie's character instead of returning to don the Captain America suit.

Captain America 4 is currently in development.
