The world of Call of Duty is coming to the big screen, and it could become the next big military movie.
First released in 2003, Call of Duty has grown into one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. Now, it is finally getting a movie adaptation through a joint production between Paramount Pictures and Activision.
With director Peter Berg at the helm, known for his military action films such as The Kingdom, Battleship, and Lone Survivor, what can be expected from the upcoming Call of Duty movie?
What to Expect From Peter Berg’s Call of Duty Movie?
Peter Berg may be the perfect director for the Call of Duty movie, but the project becomes even more promising with screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, known for creating Yellowstone and the hit military-espionage series Lioness.
So, what approach will they take with this movie adaptation? According to reports, the two are drawing inspiration from the Modern Warfare era of the game franchise, which shifted the series from its World War II setting to modern-day conflicts and introduced some of its most iconic characters, including Task Force 141.
“So modern warfare, if you really look at the missions, and the storylines, and the characters – like Captain Price, and Soap, and Ghost, and Alex – these are complicated humans,” Berg said (via ComicBook).
Without intending to disrespect cartoon and comic book characters, Berg described the Modern Warfare games as having “very nuanced storylines.”
“There’s a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe… And, yes, there’s violence, and there’s hardware, and equipment, and there’s killing,” the filmmaker explained. “But underneath it I think the game, and the craters of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry.”
Fans who have played the games will remember the intense moments in Modern Warfare 2, which show the physical and emotional sacrifices soldiers make to complete their missions.
“And that’s real stuff,” Berg continued. “This is not just ‘Hey, let’s shoot them all up and shoot popcorn!’ Like, there’s a soul underneath it, that I understand that Taylor Sheridan understands, and I think probably not quite as graphically violent as Mosquito Bowl, but there will be a very strong soul, and consequence of war within the film, called ‘duty.’”
What Is the Call of Duty Movie About?
Peter Berg announced during the Call of Duty in Culture panel at the 2025 Fanatics Fest in New York City that its upcoming movie adaptation would be set in the Modern Warfare universe.
While details about the film have been kept under wraps, gamers may already be familiar with the world and storylines that could inspire the film.
The franchise has more than 30 mainline games, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in 2007, which marked the series' shift away from its original WWII setting.
Largely set in the modern day, this part of the franchise follows Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 team as they undertake missions against various threats, including the terrorist Vladimir Makarov.
The story continues across subsequent Modern Warfare installments, which explore different global conflicts and threats.
The yet-to-be-titled Call of Duty movie is scheduled for release on June 30, 2028.
