I'll be honest, I had never heard of the sport kabaddi before this anime came along, but watching the trailer for the anime has me pretty excited to learn more about it and checking out some high octane court sports action!

Burning Kabaddi Episode 1 News and Everything You Need to Know

Based on a shonenmanga of the same name created by Hajime Musashino, the series has been running since July 2015 and has been collected into 15 volumes as of October 2020.

In the series, the main character is named Tatsuya Yoigoshi who used to be the star of his junior high soccer team but has since come to dislike sports. Once he gets to high school, he is invited to join the school's Kabaddi club, which he initially refuses until he actually sees a practice session.

For those of you who have absolutely no clue what Kabaddi is (I was among you for a while), I did some research and found out that this is a contact sport played largely in Asia but not much outside of that area. In the sport, you have two teams of seven. One person is the "raider" and must rush into their opponent's territory and tag out as many players as possible before returning to their home territory without being tackled. Sounds pretty intense to me!

Sports anime can be popular if done correctly (see: Slam Dunk, Kuroko's Basketball, Yuri!!! On Ice, Hajime no Ippo, and so many others). The secret seems to be being able to keep up the appropriate intensity when needed and never letting it waver. Will this series be able to overcome that hurdle?
