Black Widow is set in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. While fans have already gotten a glimpse of Natasha Romanoff's past in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it looks like they'll be seeing an even younger version of the character in the upcoming movie.
At the Oscars 2020 Red Carpet, hair and makeup team Paul Gooch and David White, who were nominated for their work on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, recently spoke with Variety. The outlet asked the pair with regards to their work in the Marvel movie and how it differs from the Avengers movies. "Well we're going back in time to when they're much younger," Gooch revealed. "And we have actors playing even younger than they [Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh] are, the same characters type of thing."
He also mentioned that they were in different countries and that there are "all sorts of things in it," with some that can be seen in the movie's trailer.
This essentially confirms that the movie will feature flashback scenes of Natasha as well as Yelena Belova with younger actors, which makes sense since the solo movie will be revealing the character's backstory so it'll likely have different points in time with regards to Black Widow's past.
If it were to be a scene with a teenage Natasha, Marvel could opt for the CGI de-aging effect, just like what they did with Robert Downey Jr. in Civil War, but it looks like the studio would prefer younger actors to play the characters in the flashback sequences this time.
Black Widow is set for release on May 1.
