Black Widow Actress Florence Pugh Apologizes for Cultural Misappropriation

Black Widow star Florence Pugh is trying to right her wrongs by apologizing for cultural misappropriation that she had done when she was younger.

Taking to Instagram, the award-winning Lady MacBeth star decided to come out with a lengthy apology in an attempt to take accountability for past misdeeds. In her post, Pugh apologizes for her cultural appropriation, saying that she feels very "ashamed" when she looks back at the pictures she'd taken where she would wear cornrows and henna tattoos when she was younger.

As much as they seem like fashion statements today, cornrows and henna has both a cultural and religious significance to Indians.

"The world is trying to make change and I'm learning a tidal wave of information that frankly, was always there but I was unaware of," the actress wrote in her apology.

According to Pugh, the last four weeks have been a major turning point when it came to understanding and acknowledging her own white privilege.

This journey towards enlightenment began when a fan called the actress out for sharing a photo of herself when she was 17.

"I braided my hair and painted a beanie with the Jamaican flag colours and went to a friend's house, proud of my Rastafarian creation. I then posted about it the next day with a caption that paraphrased the lyrics to Shaggy's song ‘Boombastic,'" she explained, adding, "I am ashamed of so many things in those few sentences."

According to the actress, her actions back then were "uneducated," because she had been "obsessed" with Indian culture and henna art.

While some fans might not understand Pugh's 3-page apology, it's great to see the actress taking steps to acknowledge her privilege and the wrongdoings that she made in the past.

Black Widow is set to premiere on November 6, 2020.
