Black Knight Episode 1 reveals how air pollution started in Korea.
5-8, played by Kim Woo Bin, narrates the disaster 40 years ago during which a comet collided with Earth. The event caused most continents to be submerged, with the whole Korean peninsula turning into a desert, and only 1 percent of the population survived the tragic event.
Due to the polluted air that developed after the collision, the country invented the Air Core. This gigantic device converts oxyanium into oxygen to help the survivors get through their everyday lives.
The disaster also led to the division of the population, with people getting separated by QR codes and being categorized into General, Special, and Core districts.
Meanwhile, those who do not belong in the districts are called refugees. They become hunters to get their own resources amid scarcity.
Through deliverymen, people can obtain necessities and oxygen to keep themselves alive amid the toxic air pollution in 2071. They are up against hunters to protect what they deliver to people.

Black Knight Episode 1 Recap
Black Knight Episode 1 starts with a quarrel in the Gangnam Refugee District. Yoo Sa Wol (Kang You Seok), a refugee who wants to become a Knight like 5-8, faces hunters while Useless (Lee Joo Seung), Dummy (Jeong Eun Seong), and Dumb-Dumb (Lee Sang Jin).
5-8 (Kim Woo Bin) starts his job at the General District to change the compressed oxygen in an area. While doing his job, he receives a notification regarding an emergency involving hunters who take advantage of a newbie delivering goods.
Jung Seul Ah (Roh Yoon Seo) also makes her purchase; Yoon Sa Wol, on the other hand, bumps into Jung Seol Ah (Esom) while trying to take supplies and attempting to become a Knight. Although he gets grounded for 15 days, he gets out again to meet Grandpa's group.
The episode also introduces Song Seung Heon's character, Ryu Seok. He is the heir to the Cheonmyeong Group, which takes advantage of oxygen demand to rule the world. He meets President Chae Jin Gyeong and his father, Chairman Ryu Jae Jin, to discuss the operational test of the Air Road.

Yoon Sa Wol and his three friends try to ride on 5-8's delivery vehicle, but the legendary delivery rider gets rid of them through electricity. While Yoon Sa Wol survives, he still gets kicked out of the vehicle.
Grandpa warns everyone of a huge event by ringing the bell. Even 5-8 finds himself in the middle of multiple tornados amid the worsening air pollution. He gets caught by the Major after getting off-route, but the army also releases him after confirming his identity.
While visiting the labor market, he meets a child who wants to become a deliveryman. He soon meets the informant to inform him about failing to delay the construction of a new district in post-apocalyptic Korea.
After 5-8 left Jung Seul Ah's home, intruders suddenly attacked the house and killed both the woman and Yoon Sa Wol.
