Birds of Prey: Early Reactions for Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask have been Great

Though he may not be playing Obi-Wan Kenobi anytime soon, Ewan McGregor has signed on to play the main villain of the DCEU's Birds of Prey film. We don't have an official look at his Black Mask yet, but early reactions for his character have actually been positive.

This comes from insider Daniel Richtman who posted on Twitter:

While Black Mask/Roman Sionis doesn't have the same prestige as characters like the Joker or Riddler, I think it's because he's way too messed up as a villain to include in the more PG-friendly versions of the show—that's why you don't really know him when you're a kid.

In the comics, the Black Mask is an extreme sadist, and he drove Catwoman's sister Maggie insane by murdering her husband then force-feeding her his mutilated eyeballs. I'm not kidding:

While I don't expect to see that kind of SAW-level violence in Birds of Prey, I'm sure they'll find ways to make Black Mask truly terrifying. I mean, they're teaming him up with Victor Zsaz, who is a serial killer creep in his own right. Most likely Zsaz works for Sionis, but it's Mask who is ultimately the more terrible person.

We don't know when we're going to get our first look at Birds of Prey, but it's likely we could get a teaser this coming SDCC 2019. With the film coming out early next year, it's very likely we get a preview before the year ends.

Catch Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) in theaters Feb. 7, 2020.
