It has already been a few weeks since Birds of Prey arrived on theaters and most fans have already seen director Cathy Yan's take on the all-female ensemble. While they took inspiration and ideas from comics and video games for the film, popular dating show, The Bachelor, was actually part of Yan's original pitch (amongst others).

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Yan talked about putting together "a sizzle reel" when she landed a meeting with Warner Bros. However, the director pointed out that it was "not your typical sizzle reel." Set to a homemade remix of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," she put together a collage of videos that "embodied the worst of modern womanhood."

"Like, scenes from Bachelor proposals, the De Beers diamond commercial, Kim Kardashian's vampire facial, Fox anchors talking about women, Trump saying ‘Grab 'em by the p*ssy,'" Yan said. "Stuff that might make a girl want to smash the patriarchy." After the director showed the video, she revealed there was "just silence."

Yan's initial ideas for the film eventually paid off and Margot Robbie, lead star and producer of the film, said she was even "perfect for it." The actor said Yan gave the "best pitch" and that she "understood the piece" and "elevated the ideas" they have been working on.

The director certainly had a unique approach with Birds of Prey and she didn't just grab some stuff from the pages of the DC comic books. The film wasn't overtly political but surely makes a mark and is clear on what it's trying to say.
