There is little doubt that Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a wild ride that is not connected to the ongoing storyline of the DC Extended Universe. But did Warner Bros. actually try to get director Cathy Yen set up Harley's story to prepare for her return in The Suicide Squad? Interestingly, the filmmaker revealed she was never pressured to do so.
Yan recently spoke to JOE.ie about Birds of Prey and she was asked whether the film will set up Harley's reintroduction in the next DCEU flick. However, Yan stated that she was never asked to consider the character's story arc in The Suicide Squad.
"No. Frankly, no," Yan said. "I think that's what's so liberating about being a part of the DC Cinematic universe as a filmmaker right now, is that we really are able to just work on our movie and make it a standalone and original piece of work."
It's great to hear that Warner Bros. is giving filmmakers working on DCEU flick more freedom to pursue a story that can stand on its own without worrying about the other movies. This way, fans can watch and enjoy Birds of Prey as a standalone film that focuses on strong female characters.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) also stars Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco, and Chris Messina. The film is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
