The village thrives in the middle of nature, clinging to its timeless traditions.
However, the village celebrates the Watanagashi festival once a year and with its arrival, Keiichi’s peaceful existence is shattered as he is pushed into an unending spiral of tragedy and violence.
Shiki
Shiki is set in Sotobamura, a tiny village of 1300 residents that's disconnected from any highways.
Here, ancient customs like traditional burials persist. When three bodies turn up dead, Dr. Ozaki Toshio initially dismisses it as routine. But as more villagers succumb, uncertainty grips the isolated community.
The atmosphere created in Shiki is fantastic and despite being a slow-burner horror anime, Shiki’s buildup is amazingly and haunting.
Another
As Koichi Sasakibara starts at his new school, an unsettling vibe pervades his class, hinting at a hidden truth nobody dares discuss.
Amid it all stands Mei Misaki who is a beautiful girl. Intrigued by her, Koichi soon notices a peculiar detail – no one else acknowledges her existence in the class.
Another is a fine example of presenting a mysterious horror anime with a healthy dose of gore.

Elfen Lied
Elfen Lied is considered an absolutely cruel series that is sadistic and brutal at its core making it a great terrifying gore horror anime series.
The anime is about the Diclonius, which is a mutated human believed to be chosen by god and is destined to bring about humanity’s downfall.
The Diclonius has horn-like protrusions on their head and possesses telekinetic abilities dubbed a sixth sense.
They have dangerous powers, which is why they are imprisoned in government facilities.
Lucy, a young and unstable Diclonius, breaks free from captivity, slaughtering guards before being shot in the head during her escape.
Surviving the attack, she washes ashore where teenagers Yuka and Kouta find her.
Taken by Kouta, they soon realize that she might be a threat.
Dorohedoro
Caiman, a reptilian-headed amnesiac, teams up with his companion Nikaido to reclaim his lost memories and navigate through a bizarre and dangerous world, striving to stay alive.
MAPPA's Dorohedoro is bizarre and bloody and if you fancy something gritty with an excellent worldbuilding then you must watch Dorohedoro.
Parasyte – The Maxim
What could go wrong when an alien infects a high schooler’s limb?
Parasyte – The Maxim follows Shinichi Izumu, an ordinary high school student, who finds his life turned upside down when an alien parasite infects his right hand, dubbing itself Migi, meaning right in Japanese.
Unlike other parasites, Migi forms a unique symbiotic bond with Shinichi, leading to an uneasy friendship between the two.
But they soon realize they are not alone as more parasites start to prey on humans.
Parasyte – The Maxim has an interesting plot with great gory and horror scenes making it an amazing watch in this genre.

Berserk
Berserk is an absolute masterpiece that has a cult following in the fandom.
Based on the late Kentaro Miura’s iconic manga of the same name, Berserk revolves around Guts, also known as The Black Swordsman, who reflects on his time as a member of the Band of the Hawk, infamous as the Grim Reaper of the Battlefield.
