Ben Affleck's Batman Movie Would Have Explored Arkham Asylum and Bruce's Dark Side

Now that Robert Pattinson has officially replaced Ben Affleck as Batman, the only thing fans can do now is think of the possibilities that could have happened with Affleck's version. At one point, Affleck was set to star and direct The Batman before Warner Bros decided to have Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves helm the film instead. As we ponder on what could have been, one of the cinematographers for Affleck's version of the movie revealed some details and they are very intriguing.

Robert Richardson, who recently worked on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, appeared in the Happy Sad Confused podcast and was able to discuss some of the ideas they had for Ben Affleck's The Batman. There's a lot of ideas here that will make fans happy, including the film being partially set in Arkham Asylum.

It seems like the film was going to be very psychological, exploring Batman's psyche and his dark side, which would have been interesting to witness. While there have been a lot of Batman movies in the past, none of them have really explored what's in Bruce Wayne's mind, except maybe Batman Begins.

"Well, he was going more into the insanity aspects. So I think you would've seen something a little darker than what we've seen in the past and more into the individual, who was inside Batman - what element may be sane and what element may actually not be sane. So he was entering into a little more of the Arkham, as you know, he's going into where you keep everyone who was bad, everyone that shifted and Batman. And so that whole aspect was sort of, it was very fascinating to go to the darker side of Batman."

With The Batman acting more like a Year One-style story, it's not yet known if we'll get any kind of Arkham Asylum in the movie. Most of us can assume that the villains will be brought to Arkham but it's doubtful that Bruce will be spending much time in the asylum.

The Batman is currently scheduled for a June 25, 2021 release.
