Barack and Michelle Obama's daughter, Malia, has decided to drop her last name in her directorial debut for one specific reason, and it's not what you might think.
As the Obamas are facing divorce speculations recently, Malia's decision to "change" her identity is geared towards flourishing her budding career.
Why Did Malia Ann Drop Her Last Name, Obama?
The news came quite suddenly when Malia's name appeared as 'Malia Ann' instead of 'Malia Obama' in a "Meet the Artist" clip from the Sundance Institute on YouTube.
As the 26-year-old Malia Ann comes out of her shell to become the filmmaker she aspired to be, Michelle reveals the gist of why their daughter decided to stray from her family name.
On Monday, the former first lady appeared in an episode of Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, in which she shared the time when Malia and her sister, Sasha (now 23 years old) went through a "push away phase" in their teenagehood, "I mean, they're still doing that."

Michelle understands why her daughters would want to "distinguish" themselves to carve their own paths, even if it meant losing the Obama streak, especially after considering that Malia's parents, after all, are well-known public figures.
"It's very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world," Michelle said, "They don't want people to assume they don't work hard and that they're naturally just handed things. They're very sensitive to that. They want to be their own people."
In the same interview, Michelle addressed how she and Barack reacted to showing Malia Ann without her last name, "We were like, 'They're still going to know it's you, Malia,'" she continued, "But we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way."
What Does Malia Ann's Short Film Debut Entail?
Malia Ann is pursuing her Hollywood career by debuting her short film, The Heart, at the Sundance Institute.
The story, which was written and directed by Malia herself, is described to be an "odd little story, somewhat of a fable" about a man grieving the loss of his mother after receiving an "unusual" request in her will.
"The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things," Malia narrates in the voiceover of the clip.
"We hope you enjoy the film and that it makes you feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are," she later added.
Former President Barack Obama initially opened up about it in October 2024, where he detailed how 'stubborn' and 'sensitive' his daughters were when it comes to the family name.
"Malia, she's making movies, so she made her first movie. And you know, I'll be a dad, I'll brag a little bit... her first film went to Sundance and all these fancy film festivals, and she didn't use Obama as director on the credits," Obama shared.
He explained that despite the possibility of being known as the former first daughter, "She was like, 'You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association.'" which Obama respected and added, "Our daughters go out of their way to not try to leverage that."
