Netflix released the trailer of a new action-packed K-drama called Ballerina. However, you should not confuse this with the upcoming John Wick spinoff movie of the same title. So what is Netflix's Ballerina Kdrama about and how different is it from the spinoff movie?
For starters, the Kdrama Ballerina is not in the same universe as John Wick. They are two entirely different movies that belong to the same genre.
The Kdrama was actually one of the K-content announced at Netflix Korea's Tudum event. Here's what we know about the movie.
When is Ballerina Kdrama Coming Out?
Principal photography for the K-drama, Ballerina, started in June 2022. The cast and crew announced that they finished filming the scenes for the movie in late October 2022. Since then, the show has been in post-production.
On September 7, 2023, Netflix released a teaser for the film with a release date announcement. This confirms that the movie will be coming out on Netflix on Friday, October 6, 2023.
Who Stars in Ballerina?
Right now, only three cast members have been revealed by Netflix. It also reunites two cast members who previously worked on Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area: Jeon Jong-seo and Kim Ji-hoon.
Jeon Jong-seo has been cast to play the role of Ok-ju in Ballerina. You might recognize her as Tokyo from the South Korean adaptation of the hit Netflix series, Money Heist.
Before this, Jong-seo starred in the Netflix horror flick, The Call.
Joining Jong-seo is Kim Ji-hoon, who was cast for the role of Pro Choi. Ji-hoon was previously in Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area where he played the role of Denver.
He had a guest role in Netflix's Behind Every Star. He will also be starring in the upcoming series, Love to Hate You. Ji-hoon is most notable for his roles in Flower of Evil, Bad Thief, Good Thief, and Rich Family's Son.
The third actress that was revealed by Netflix is Park Yoo-rim, who plays the role of Min Hee in Ballerina. Since her debut in Dxyz in 2017, Ballerina is Yoo-rim's first leading role.
She also starred in several other Netflix Original shows like Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Kingdom, and My First First Love.
Ballerina K-drama Crew
The South Korean revenge thriller is directed and written by Lee Chung-hyun. This is his second project for Netflix after the success of the horror flick, The Call.
It also serves as his reunion project with Jeon Jong-seo, who starred in the movie.
Ballerina is produced by Choi Ji-young, who is famous for The Gangster. Bargain's Byun Seung-min serves as the film's executive producer.
What is Ballerina K-drama About?
Netflix's official synopsis for the film reads:
"Grieving the loss of a best friend she couldn't protect, ex-bodyguard Ok-ju sets out to fulfill her dear friend's last wish: sweet, sweet revenge."
Ok-ju (played by Jeon Jong-seo) is a former bodyguard with a knack for martial arts, motorcycle riding, gunmanship, and sword fighting.
When Ok-ju's friend, Min Hee (played by Park Yoo-rim), is killed, she seeks out the revenge that Min Hee asked for.
Ok-ju goes on a hunt to avenge Pro Choi (played by Kim Ji-hoon) as a way of honoring her promise.
Where Can You Watch Ballerina?
Ballerina will exclusively be released on Netflix on Friday, October 6, 2023. This is the only platform where you can watch the film.
