The iconic '90s series Baywatch is finally getting rebooted today as it has received an official greenlight from Fox for the 2026-27 season release.
For years, there have been attempts to do a reboot of the beloved series, which famously turned David Hasselhoff into a global icon and launched the career of Pamela Anderson. A film adaptation was released in 2017 starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, but it was maligned by critics and audiences. Now, we have another new version on the horizon for the current generation.
What to Expect in Fox's Baywatch Reboot
According to Deadline, Fox has given a 12-episode straight-to-series order for the long-gestated reboot of Baywatch that will premiere in the 2026-27 broadcast season.
Burn Notice creator Matt Nix will serve as the showrunner for the new version of the iconic series. It will likely shoot in California, similar to the original version in the '90s.
The project's logline stated that the Baywatch reboot "will feature adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast donning the show’s signature red swimsuits, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline."
The network promised to fans that it would "bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that makes the Baywatch franchise a global sensation."
There is no word yet on whether it will introduce new characters or a new version of the characters from the original that will be redefined by the actors of today. It is unknown if Hasselhoff and/or Anderson will be involved in some capacity. No casting has also been made yet.
The confirmation of the Baywatch reboot came in light of the cancellation of Rescue: HI-Surf, an original lifeguard drama series that aired on Fox for one season.
