Avril Lavigne is one of the most well-known singers of today. She established a successful career in the 2000s and that, of course, comes with good compensation.

She's not only a successful singer, but she's also a successful fashion designer behind the rock n roll clothing line Abbey Dawn. With a successful music career and a business, how have these things made Avril Lavigne one of the wealthiest pop-rock stars of today?

The Start of Avril Lavigne's Music Career

The Canadian singer's father converted their home's basement into a music studio when she was five years old. He then gave her a microphone, a keyboard, a drum kit and a few guitars.

Later, she was already performing Garth Brooks and Shania Twain covers at country fairs and writing her own songs.

At 14, she joined a radio competition and got the opportunity to sing onstage with Twain herself.

Come 1999, she signed with her first manager, Cliff Fabri, after seeing her singing covers at a bookstore. He then sent videotapes of her performances to his contacts.

The Canadian management firm Nettwerk's Mark Jowett made arrangements to bring her to New York to work with producer/songwriter Peter Zizzo in 2000.

Later that year, A&R representative Ken Krongard invited Arista Records head Antonio "L.A." Reid to hear her sing and in that instant, he signed her to a $1.25-million record deal. She also received a $900,000 publishing advance.

The Rise of Avril Lavigne’s Stardom

After two years, Avril Lavigne completed her first album, Let Go, which became No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release.

It even went No. 1 in Canada, Australia and the U.K. It was also certified four times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) at the end of 2002. After 16 years, it became seven times platinum.

She was also 2002's bestselling female artist and her first album sold more copies than other debut albums released that year.

This made her the second artist with three top 10 hits from a debut album on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart.

Her next albums, Under My Skin (2004), The Best Damn Thing (2007), Goodbye Lullaby (2011), Avril Lavigne (2013) and Head Above Water (2019), also produced a number of hit songs, like “My Happy Ending” and “Girlfriend.”
