Avengers: Infinity War Ending was Inspired by The Empire Strikes Back

Avengers: Infinity War is probably seen by many as the best film in MCU history as it managed to raise the stakes to an unbelievably high degree. While most of us knew that things would be undone by Endgame - thanks Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer - we were also still intrigued by that shocker of an ending and how everything would be put back to normal. The silence that came from cinemagoers after that ending was deafening and is exactly what The Russos wanted.

Unsurprisingly, the shocking Infinity War ending was inspired by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, which has acted as the blueprint for many on how to make a good sequel. The ending to Empire was also pretty grim after all, with Han Solo seemingly dying and Luke Skywalker losing his hand to a dramatic battle against Darth Vader, who also revealed himself as Luke's father. It still sticks with fans and is why many strive to achieve an Empire Strikes Back-style sequel.

Ironically enough, the ending to Infinity War was a lot grimmer in the film's context but the fact that movies were announced in advance sort of dampened some of our expectations. That's just the nature of making movies in the internet age since things were much more different when The Empire Strikes Back first came out. It's a time period we can't really recreate anymore.

Still, to those that saw it or continue to watch the movie, Avengers: Infinity War will remain a big moment in cinema. Hell, the MCU itself is one hell of an accomplishment, managing to build a cinematic universe with connecting stories that other studios are still struggling with. The film is now available on Disney+, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
