One of the most memorable scenes in Avengers: Endgame is when the female heroes got together to help Spider-Man and Captain Marvel keep the Infinity Gauntlet away from Thanos. A lot of fans were ecstatic to see the women of Marvel Cinematic Universe share the screen while others felt like it just didn't make sense.
So what was this scene meant to achieve? Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely can think of a couple--to showcase the female roster that the MCU has racked up over the years, and because it was just so dang cool to leave out.
In an interview with New York Times, Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they had to go over this scene a lot in deciding whether it should be included. Obviously, the scene made the cut.
"There was much conversation. Is that delightful or is it pandering? We went around and around on that," McFeely said, before deciding that they "like it too much" to cut it out of the movie.
Markus added that it was also a great way to showcase the impressive female roster that the MCU has racked up over the years. "Part of the fun of the Avengers movies has always been team-ups. Marvel has been amassing this huge roster of characters. You've got crazy aliens. You've got that many badass women. You've got three or four people in Iron Man suits," he explained.
Indeed, some thought the Avengers: Endgame scene was just created for pandering because there was no way, at least from what was shown in the film, that every female MCU superhero present during that battle would have bee able to be in those convenience spots for that cool shot during that final battle.
On the other hand of the spectrum, a lot of fans absolutely loved the scene, which they considered one of the highlights of the movie. Many hope that this scene is meant to set up an all-female team-up movie with these characters, although there is no clear indication of that yet. Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie, actually pitched the idea to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, so we might hear more if he is onboard. Meanwhile, some aren't sure about the idea simply because Black Widow won't be there if Marvel decides to do it.
