It took the franchise more than a decade to finally release the sequel and over the years, a lot has happened within the production that James Cameron, himself, revealed that he threatened to fire the writers of Avatar: The Way of Water during an instance.
Avatar: The Way of Water finally comes to life this year and this would not be possible without the first Avatar film being a huge success that during the time it was released, it easily bagged the highest grossing film for all time before Endgame was released.
The way to the sequel was no easy feat considering the amount of time everyone behind the film had to allot before it finally happens. During an interview with Times UK, James Cameron personally revealed that he once threatened to fire the writers of the sequel.
Cameron said, "When I sat down to write the sequels. I knew there were going to be three at the time and eventually it turned into four, I put together a group of writers and said, 'I don't want to hear anybody's new ideas or anyone's pitches until we have spent some time figuring out what worked on the first film, what connected, and why it worked."
Cameron recounts what made him threaten them, "They kept wanting to talk about the new stories. I said, 'We aren’t doing that yet.' Eventually I had to threaten to fire them all because they were doing what writers do, which is to try and create new stories."
Cameron reiterated to them what it means for them to understand first before creating something new, "I said, 'We need to understand what the connection was and protect it, protect that ember and that flame.'"
Avatar explored Pandora where humans are colonizing the Na'vi in their own planet resulting to a conflict between the two races. It became the highest-grossing movie of all time for a decade with $2.84 billion before being dethroned in 2019. 3D technology is one of the main reasons for its success.
After 13 years of preparations, Avatar: The Way of Water will be coming out this year and it is expected that there are more films to come under the franchise with Cameron confirming at the D23 Expo that the fourth movie already in the works.
Avatar: The Way of Water will be featuring a whole new perspective on Pandora with the family of Jake Sully and Neytiri growing with their children Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuktirey, and their adopted kids, Spider, a human, and Kiri, a teenage Na'vi.
Avatar: The Way of Water premieres in theaters on December 16, 2022.
