It looks like the Aquaman spin-off film The Trench is definitely happening and it could happen sooner than we think. It has just been revealed that the horror movie will not feature Jason Momoa and that it could premiere before Aquaman 2.
Aquaman producer Peter Safran recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about plans for The Trench. Safran admitted that he and director James Wan were eager to pursue the spin-off even while they were working on the DC Extended Universe flick.
"We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie," Safran said. "Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be."
Safran added that The Trench might be their next big project. "I suspect that that's one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2," he admitted.
Although we can expect the Trench to be the main focus in the spin-off flick, it looks like Momoa will not be a part of the project. According to Safran, Arthur Curry and Mera (Amber Heard) are not going to be in the film. In addition to that, The Trench takes place after the events in the first Aquaman movie.
The Trench has not yet been given an official release date but an official announcement could be made later this year. Aquaman 2 is scheduled for release on December 16, 2022.
