The unprecedented success of Aquaman not only gave the DC Extended Universe its first billion-dollar accolade but it also helped turn one of comic book's goofiest characters into the badass hero he was always meant to be. Now, it's safe to assume that Warner Bros. is giving director James Wan more creative freedom for the sequel which reportedly begins filming this Summer. Apparently, Wan isn't the only one who is calling the shots for the project as lead star Jason Momoa recently revealed that he had more input in the film's creative direction.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, the former Game of Thrones actor teased an even bigger role in Aquaman 2 and not just as an actor, but as a screenwriter as well. According to Momoa, he helped pen the script for the sequel with his writing partner and as it turns out, his input will actually be used in the film.

Momoa excitingly shared: "After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David [Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick] finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that's exciting for me and I'm excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming."

Momoa didn't exactly go into detail about his contribution to the script and the film's actual plot but it's nice to know that he's been given some sort of an upgraded role in the project. And by the looks of it, the film is going to be more of a collaborative effort between James Wan, the writers, and the actors themselves which is actually refreshing to see taking into consideration how WB has always been deemed by fans and critics as a studio that is too controlling. It's a step in the right direction, to say the least.

Aquaman 2 is eyeing a December 2022 release date.
