Anthony Mackie Says Marvel Shouldn’t Expect Him to Keep Silent on Racial Inequality As Captain America

Last month, Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie decided to stand up and call out Marvel for the racial inequality that he's noticed behind the scenes will working on various projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, Marvel has been trying its best to support diversity and representation in recent films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, however, the studio has a long way to go in terms of promoting minority groups.

Speaking in a brand new interview with Fatherly magazine (via Comic Book Review), Mackie decided to clarify the comments that he initially gave, explaining that Marvel doesn't really have a problem with racism, but instead awareness.

"I'll say this: I don't think what's happening is a racism problem," the actor told the publication during the discussion, "I think it's an unawareness problem. With Marvel, I really think with most companies, they feel like they're doing what they should be doing. In no way, shape, or form, is it enough. My big thing is, put your money where your mouth is. You can't cast a Black dude as one of your main superheroes and not expect him to have that conversation. It's just in my DNA to have that conversation."

Mackie makes a good point. Marvel shouldn't really expect him to keep quiet seeing racial inequality going on around him despite the efforts that the studio has made to market itself as a "socially progressive" franchise.

According to Mackie, being part of the MCU is a huge opportunity, and so he takes it upon himself to help improve the franchise as much as he can.

"Anyone who's big in our industry, if they have a party at their house, their party is 98 percent white. If you go to their office and their office is 98 percent white, that reflects their reality," Mackie went on explaining.

The Avengers: Endgame star does make a strong point. Marvel ought to ramp up its efforts at equality, not just in front of the screen, but behind it as well.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is expected to premiere sometime next year.
