Anthony Daniels on Whether C-3PO Appears in Future Star Wars Films

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have closed the curtain on Star Wars' Skywalker saga, but does the film really mean the end of C-3PO?

Sitting down with the hosts of The View to talk about the legacy that he's built as the Star Wars franchise's nervous communications protocol droid C-3PO, Daniels was asked whether Three-Pio would ever return after The Rise of Skywalker. Trying to dodge the question, Daniels echoes Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) line from Star Wars: The Last Jedi: no one's ever really gone, fans can always visit C-3PO again if they get a copy of The Rise of Skywalker's home release.

But that's not all. Daniels reveals that while he was eager to let the droid's story end in The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams had his own ideas for the character.

"Oh, he's not over. I said to J.J. when we were filming, 'Maybe it's time to put Threepio to sleep, to give him an end,' and he said, 'Not on my watch,'" Daniels told the show's hosts, "But one of the great things that happened is that, back in the day, 1975, you couldn't have video in your home, it didn't exist. Big TV studios, you could have it. Now, it's gone through all the iterations from laserdisc to whatever, and now you do have it, first of all downloadable, and at the end of the month, you can actually buy it on disc, and here's the important thing: when you have it on disc, you have control. In the movie theater, it whizzes by, at home, you can say, 'Oh, I want to see Anthony Daniels in that scene again.'"

While the future of the Star Wars film franchise seems uncertain, we can't blame fans for hoping to see C-3PO in the new films. It's hard to imagine a Star Wars movie without C-3PO in it. The communications droid has been in every Star Wars movie in the Skywalker saga and Daniels himself has appeared in all of the Star Wars films including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Let's wait and see whether future Star Wars film will provide room for C-3PO's return.
