Angela Bassett Makes MCU History with Oscar Nomination for Black Panther 2

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced today where they revealed the 2022 films that are being honored at this year's Oscars ceremony. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the list with a whopping 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and four acting nods.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever managed to grab five nominations. While it wasn't able to earn the Best Picture nomination just like the first film, it still showed up in Best Supporting Actress (Angela Bassett), Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Song.

Bassett, who is currently considered the frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Queen Ramonda, is competing against other actresses such as Hong Chau (The Whale), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), and both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

This is historical for the MCU (or Marvel in general) since this is the first time ever that an actor received an Oscar nomination for a Marvel movie and now it is likely that the actress could also go her way to win based on her awards season performance so far.

Meanwhile, the film is joining the Best Visual Effects line-up with other acclaimed and blockbuster hits such as All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, and Top Gun: Maverick.

With the recognition of the song "Lift Me Up" in the Best Original Song, Rihanna earned her first-ever Oscar nomination in her career. She is nominated alongside Lady Gaga (Top Gun: Maverick) and the songs from RRR, Tell It Like a Woman, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Best Costume Design sees its return in the race as the first film won the category back when it was competing. It is nominated alongside Babylon, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

As for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling race, the film will be competing against All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Elvis.

It is certainly exciting to see the film end up getting multiple nominations which just shows that The Academy did respond somehow and it also puts Bassett into the position of potentially becoming the first performer to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie which makes this more special.
