The legendary composer and musical theater impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber has produced has some of the most iconic musicals today, like Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, and, of course, Phantom of the Opera.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Career

The 75-year-old started his career in 1965. Since then, he has composed 21 musicals, a song cycle, a set of variations, two film scores, and a Latin Requiem Mass.

Several of his hit musicals have been in the West End and Broadway for over a decade.

Outside the musicals, his songs have become massive hits after being widely recorded and covered.

Some of those tracks are Cats' "Memory," The Phantom of the Opera's "The Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You," Jesus Christ Superstar's "I Don't Know How to Love Him," Evita's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat's "Any Dream Will Do."

With this series of successes, The New York Times dubbed Webber as "the most commercially successful composer in history" in 2001, while The Daily Telegraph ranked him the "fifth most powerful person in British culture" in 2008."

Alternatively, lyricist Don Black claimed that Webber "single-handedly reinvented the musical."

Of course, this success also comes with several accolades, from Tonys to Grammys to an Academy Award and more.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Mourns Son's Passing

Webber announced the death of his eldest son, Nicholas Lloyd Webber, due to cancer. He was 43.

The young Webber had been receiving treatment for gastric cancer and died at Basingstoke Hospital, Hampshire, per BBC.

"I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago," he wrote on Twitter Saturday, March 25. "His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft."

Nicholas followed in the footsteps of his father. He was also Grammy-nominated and scored the music for the adaptation of The Little Prince.
