What Is a Sorcerer in The Ancient Magus' Bride?
In The Ancient Magus' Bride's setting, sorcerers, also known as alchemists, study magic in an attempt to explain it, and ultimately, manipulate it.
Unlike mages, who borrow power from Fairies or from their surroundings, sorcerers turn their own physical energy into magic.
When Chise attends the College where others like her study magic, she finds that most of her classmates are sorcerers.
While an aptitude for magic is genetic in mages and Sleigh Beggys, sorcerers are able to learn how to use magic like any other skill.

Is Chise a Mage or a Sorcerer?
Chise is a Sleigh Beggy, an extremely rare magic user. Sleigh Beggys combine mage and sorcerer abilities.
Unlike mages and sorcerers who must study and practice before they can use their abilities, Sleigh Beggys are extremely receptive to their surrounding magic and have an aptitude for creating their own.
However, this combination of reception and generation of magic takes its toll.
Since Sleigh Beggys aren't physically stronger than mages, their bodies eventually give away and they tend to die young.
This was a concern for Chise, as she was already very frail when Elias took her in.
Fans wonder if Chise will die, and, while she has averted this fate for now, others like her haven't.
Joseph's immortality curse cancels out the dragon curse that was going to clip Chise's lifespan even further, so she's safe for now.
Because of that, the College, where magic is studied, asks for her to enroll in hopes of studying her and eventually finding a solution to prolong other Sleigh Beggys' lives.
That being said, Chise is currently the apprentice of Elias, a mage. Ultimately, her studies with him might result in her also becoming a full-fledged mage.
Are There Any Other Categories?
Other than mages, sorcerers, and Sleigh Beggys, the setting of The Ancient Magus' Bride also features witches.
It appears that witches are more likely to delve into curses and darker forms of magic.
Moreover, some mages, like Angelica, are also Artificers, so they make enchanted tools.
