The first trailer for the upcoming Alien: Romulus has dropped, and it looks like the franchise will return to its sci-fi horror roots.
The new movie, set between Alien and Aliens, follows a young group of space colonists aboard a derelict space station.
Originally destined for Hulu and Disney Plus, Alien: Romulus is heading exclusively to cinemas this summer.
Alien: Romulus comes from director Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead) and stars Industry’s David Jonsson and Madame Web’s Isabela Merced.
The idea for the new movie came from a deleted scene James Cameron eventually restored in his extended Special Edition cut of Aliens.
Speaking with Hollywood Reporter about his idea for Alien: Romulus, Álvarez said.
“There’s a moment where you see a bunch of kids running [and riding a big wheel] around the corridors of this colony. And I thought, ‘Wow, what would it be like for those kids to grow up in a colony that still needs another 50 years to terraform?’” Álvarez tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So I remember thinking, ‘If I ever tell a story in that world, I would definitely be interested in those kids when they reach their early twenties.’”
Ridley Scott, director of the original Alien movie, is producing this time around, and James Cameron, director of the sequel Aliens, is serving as an unofficial consultant.
Having both those names attached to Alien: Romulus will go a long way, alleviating fans' fears of another stinker being added to their beloved franchise.
Alien: Romulus will launch exclusively in cinemas worldwide on August 16.
