Agents of SHIELD and Luke Cage Writer to Work on Live-Action One Piece Series Script

Fans were pretty anxious when it was announced that Eiichiro Oda's One Piece would be getting the live-action Hollywood treatment. The fact that it'll be a series instead of a film alleviated some concern but given Hollywood's rough history of anime adaptations, fans still aren't too confident. However, some fans might be happy to know that Matt Owens - who has worked on Agents of SHIELD, Luke Cage, and The Defenders - will be penning the script for this series.

The news was broken by Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump (translated by Anime News Network), where Owens also provided a statement of his own. The Marvel writer said that One Piece is his favorite story in media and he considers it an honor to adapt something this influential. Here is the writer's full statement:

One Piece is my absolute favorite story in my life. It is my greatest honor to have the trust of Oda-sensei, Shueisha, and everyone at Tomorrow Studios to be appointed to this great role of adapting this magnificent and heart-pounding adventure into live-action. I want to display my great passion and make a story that is faithful and exciting, and will satisfy long-time fans and will also attract new fans.

Marty Adelstein, the producer of this One Piece live-action adaptation, had this to say about Owens' hiring:

When I first heard Matt's presentation of his vision for the work, I thought he was the perfect person to take on this project. What is the most impressive and important to me is that he is a true One Piece fan. I am very excited I can work with Matt, who has an overflowing talent as a scriptwriter.

No release date for the live-action One Piece series has been announced. The current anime has started the Wano arc, now under the direction of Yamauchi Sigeyasu, who directed the wonderful Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
